Writing against type

I'm writing a fic right now that's somewhat challenging in its characterization, and it got me thinking: how do you tackle characters dealing with emotions or reacting to situations they've never come close to encountering in canon? Or them consciously choosing to change who they are as a person?

For me, my fic is a Riverdale/Archie Comics fic for the FP Jones/Kevin Keller pairing called "Second Time Around." It has FP Jones, a rough and tough gang leader in canon, now trying to step up in his role as a newly single parent, as well as trying act more like a gentleman in order to convince Kevin Keller to stay with him. It can get difficult, because the situation in itself requires FP to change from how he is in canon into someone who's more gentle and caring, so it can very easily stretch the willing suspension of disbelief.

And now I'm curious! How do you, as a writer, believably keep a character as themselves while writing about them acting differently than how they are in canon, or willingly choosing to act unlike themselves?

Putin and his American Instrument: Putin and his Trumpet.

Silencing The Hillary Clinton Supporter: we've heard everything about the Trump supporters - to the point where mainstream media has been trying to 'humanise' right wing white supremacists, but nothing about the people who mostly supported Hillary - their hopes, their dreams, and what they lost when Trump was elected.

Brandon Hatmaker on Colin Kaepernick: Brandon Hatmaker is the husband (presumably) of Jen Hatmaker, an American Christian who spoke out in favour of LGBT in the church and had her books dropped from sale by one of the biggest Evangelical publishers in the US (and probably the world).

That Which Google Has Named Evil...: By co-opting a word with moral meaning to describe the functional impediment of technology without any specific morality attached, Google has effectively reframed the context of 'good' and 'evil' so that Google is God - the arbiter of what is right and wrong.

A Woman, Explaining Things: Yeah, you've probably seen this, but it's still good.

First They Came For...: New York Times, which means you might not be able to read it. (I saved it in Instapaper, which takes the page data and strips it down to the text and key images.)
This has come as a great shock and demoralizer to many Americans, not necessarily because they didn’t think Trump was capable of such depravity, but because they simply were unprepared for the daily reality of living a nightmare.

There is an enduring expectation, particularly among American liberals, that progress in this society should move inexorably toward more openness, honesty and equality. But even the historical record doesn’t support that expectation.
Some things get better, many things get worse.

Australia has had an interesting week of governmental resignations (which everyone else would have missed while That Orange Guy was tweeting away).

Two Greens Senators and a Liberal (conservative party) Senator have had to resign because it turns out they have dual citizenship, which isn't allowed for serving members of Parliament. Another Liberal Senator no longer has a dual citizenship, but was only notified that he'd been de-citizened from the other country five months after the election that raised him to his position.

And, of course, he was one of the loudest voices criticising the Greens senators for getting it wrong.

I'm an Australian, born and bred

I have decided no more Ms. Nice Lady. I am an Australian born Australian, and if someone wants to know “where did you really come from?” I am going to ask them if they’re prepared to unload their history as an Australian-born child of immigrants, or else tell me about their Indigenous Australian ancestry.

I am done with microaggressions, even the unintentional ones.

No, you don’t get to ask me what’s my background and then say that yours is “Australian”. Mine is Australian. My mother is an Australian immigrant. My father is an Australian born. I am an Australian born.

I am an Australian-born Australian.

I am no more an immigrant than any white person in this damn country and I am going to FIGHT this definition all the way, calling people racist outright if necessary.

Saw it VOSTFR 3D.

Way back when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I went HOLY SHIT THEY'RE ADAPTING L'AMBASSADEUR DES OMBRES? THAT'S MY FAVOURITE. Well. I was right, but also, I was wrong.

It has a lot similarities with L'ambassadeur des Ombres, but some major changes make it a story with a different theme/message. I'm not saying the new story has a bad theme/message -- it's a good message and I can understand the reasoning behind the changes -- but it is 100% a different message. Idk, the original Ambassadeur des Ombres comic (especially the ending!) blew my tiny mind when I read it as a child and this movie would not have. Although these changes gave us the opening scene, set to Bowie's Space Oddity, which is pretty lovely.

It's a decent movie, I guess, but it's a bad adaptation.

For example, the movie implies Laureline is from the future, which NO. The really cool thing about Laureline is that she's from the mid-Middle Ages, circa 1000CE, and used Valérian as her ticket out of that hellhole. Then she becomes a space-time cop. She is the best. Also she's a redhead.

Not sure why the Shingouz go by a different name. That seems like a pointless change.

In a way the changes -- Laureline's hair colour, the names (not how you say Valérian, Alpha vs Point central), etc -- made it easier to think of this as its own thing, rather than an adaptation.

I came out of the movie shipping Laureline/Bubble the most out of everything. I did not ship Laureline/Valérian at all. I would ship Laureline/Neza first (he recognised her temper, hahaha).

I was kind of really disappointed that Laureline seemed to be one of only two women in the Earth military. Nice future there :/ There are some vaguely sexist moments that rubbed me the wrong way, as well.

GOOD STUFF:
  • BUBBLE WAS GREAT. Bring back Bubble for the sequel!
  • The heist was pretty cool.
  • THE VISUALS ARE AMAZING.
In conclusion, good visuals, bad adapatation, decent-ish movie.

Last night I held sprints in the Discord server and it went really, really well. I focused on developing one of my MCs and guys, he's a damn mess.

My jeep will be going to the shop tonight to get the door fixed. ;3; At least it's something that I already knew needed to be done.

I've decided on the title for my capstone exhibit (that's happening next year but you know, we have to work our entire senior year on it): These Dark and Hallowed Places.

In less than a week(!!!) I'm catching a flight to London for the beginning of the Epic Wedding and Convention Tour TM, so I feel like it's time to note dates and maybe plan any meet-ups that might be possible. Thus, itinerary!

1 August - Flight to London leaves at just before midnight. Hopefully.
2 August - Flight arrives in London.
2 to 3 August - At parent's house, wedding prep.
4 to 5 August - MY SISTER HAS TWO WEDDINGS OMG.
6 August - Fly to Helsinki.
7 to 8 August - Sightseeing in Helsinki.
9 to 13 August - Worldcon in Helsinki.
14 August - Fly back to London.
15 August - SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
16 August - Day trip to Cardiff for Doctor Who exhibition.
17 to 20 August - Pottering around my parents house/home town.
21 August - Fly back to Canada.

I'm currently noodling around a trip into London for books and cake-eating on August 18 (Friday). If anyone is free to meet up for lunch/cake/drinks/supper, let me know and we'll arrange it :-) I usually hit up Foyles for a few hours because I'm a nerd, so I'll be pretty centralish.

And anyone going to Helsinki Worldcon should raise their hands so we can figure out meeting for coffee or panels or whatever.

This trip is going to be EPIC.

I just want a few hours in which to let my brain percolate these ideas, when I don't have to be sleeping or at work. Is that too much to ask?

(Apparently yes, yes it is...)

I am thinking about singing "I Know Him" for the #Ham4All challenge, with a small twist. I'm just not sure that I can carry it off!

In the grand tradition of fucked up "polls" on the internet, I present: The GOP. This is some biased garbage right here. I was positively giddy when I took it, btw - they're gonna define their narrative, but I can put my own little monkeywrench in the works. Bet those doofuses didn't even bother to set cookies so I couldn't take it twice.

Does anyone else always think of Practical Magic when they hear You Were Always On My Mind by the Pet Shop Boys?

And now it's Whitney with I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I love this song so much.

So I got kicked in the chest last Sunday. Well, upperchest/shoulder. Swimming: a more dangerous sport than you'd expect!

Was okay most of Monday, then began hurting in the evening. It's been hurting, with varying degrees of intensity, ever since. I hurt more in the evenings than mornings, but overall I thinkit's getting better. (I have an unrelated doctor appointment on Friday, so if it still hurts by then, I'll bring it up.)

Anyway, I've been taking it easy and avoiding moving that shoulder. That's why I've been mostly off the internet for now. Tomorrow I'll off the internet because I'm going to see Valerian! That should be more fun.

Last Saturday morning the heat started to break, which was very nice. What was also nice was that the day was filled with wild life.

Early in the morning we were visited by two skunks at the same time. Which was kind of crazy...also they both looked very much alike.

Still early in the morning, but after the skunks had departed, the crows were noisy, so I looked up in the sky and saw a lot of birds were in a frenzy, because there were some type of predator type birds in the sky. The turned out to be red tailed hawks, I got a lot of crappy photos, and one not too bad photo, so that was really cool too!

I will start with the hawk photo, the skunks are under the cut
